Ways Of Parenting
When the topic is about parenting, then let me tell you that, there is a great deal of debate and diversity among different families on how parenting should be done. It sometimes depends on cultural backgrounds as well. Parenting styles psychology can also differ based on factors like immigration, type of families, etc.
Mainly there are four primary types of parenting styles. They are – Authoritarian parenting, Permissive Parenting, Authoritative Parenting, and Uninvolved Parenting.
Parents who tend to use this type of parenting style have a way of using the one-way mode of communication where the parents just impose strict rules and regulations on the child, and also which the child has to abide by at any cost.
These types of parents tend to be nurturing and warm and accepting of their children. The communication here remains open and the parents also allow their children to figure things out for themselves.
What is authoritative parenting? Well, the authoritative parenting style develops a nurturing and close relationship with their children. They set clear guidelines about the expectations that they have for their child. Authoritative parents are much better than authoritarian type of parents.
In this type of parenting, the parents remain out of the child’s way and let’ them figure out things for themselves. These parents totally remain detached from their child’s life but fulfill the basic needs of their children.
What Is Authoritarian Parenting?
Authoritarian parenting is an extremely rigid form of parenting style. These parents place very high expectations on their children. They expect more discipline, control, and obedience from their kids.
When their children make any mistakes they punish their children very harshly. They use both corporal punishment and yelling when disciplining their children.
Nature Of Authoritarian Parents
What Authoritarian parents need to understand is that their expectations become too overbearing for the child. Especially when they are expected to follow orders without any explanation on why they should even follow them.
Here, are a few characteristics of such parents and tips on how to counter them:
You Show No Love
Sometimes children misbehave – Yes, but you also have to consider that this is their prime age of behaving in a carefree manner, the way they are doing. This doesn’t make your harsh and unfriendly behavior towards them excusable at all!
Instead of yelling at your kids, you could try offering your kids the time and encouragement that they need to develop some self-worth. Just yelling at them won’t make them obey you at all if you do not have the time to explain to them why their behavior is wrong.
You Are Simply Being Harsh On Your Kids
A good form of parenting should always have the parents instilling good morals into their children by being patient and considering their emotions. If you shame them constantly for their actions that do not sit right with you – then they will never learn why they should not indulge in that form of behaviour, and keep repeating the same. This benefits no one!
You do not want them to develop a rebellious nature. This can cause the bonds between you and your child to weaken as well. As a result of which, they might avoid spending time with you altogether.
You Are Impatient
As an authoritarian parent, you may least expect your children to engage in undesirable types of behavior. It is difficult for you to form a clear connection with your child, as you believe you know better and do not give them a chance to explain their perspective.
To counter this you must actively try talking with your child in a calm environment. Try asking them to explain their POV of what problems they are facing in their life.
You Do Not Show Empathy
An authoritarian type of parent generally does not show any form of warmth or affection towards their child.
I would suggest that you make an active effort in understanding your child’s emotions and problems (then half the problems would be solved I promise). Then they will also try to do their best in understanding your viewpoint and advice as well.
Effects Of Such Parenting On The Child
Parenting styles have always been associated with a wide variety of psychological disorders. It also affects their academic performance and takes a toll on the child’s academic performance.
Here are a few of the negative effects that it has on a child:
They May Display Violent Behaviour Outside Of Home
Physical punishment, harshness, and exercising too much control over them will make them act out and lead to negative behavior in them. Punishment is always not effective when disciplining your child. Violence will lead them to show hateful behavior towards you.
They Suffer From Very Low Self-Esteem
Criticizing your child would make them doubt their potential and worth. If you fail to appreciate the achievements of your child that may contribute to a very low self-esteem.
Can’t Accept Failure
Authoritarian parenting makes it clear that the children always have to top and excel in everything their children do – this puts a lot of pressure on them. Because, of course, they wouldn’t want to disappoint you, as that would mean them getting punishments again.
They Suffer From Anxiety
When your child does not do things the way they are expected to do – it causes frustration and anxiety in them. Yet they can’t help but rebel because no one wants to do things the way another person says them to. Let’s be real, you would not like to follow others’ orders either.
